Donating a stool sample might not be something you ever imagined yourself doing—but if you’re here, it means you are playing a vital role in advancing scientific research, and we’re incredibly grateful.
To make the process as easy and stress-free as possible, we’ve put together this straightforward guide to walk you through each step. Don’t worry—it’s all designed to be quick, clean and hassle-free.
On-Site Donations
At the Australian Human Microbiome Biobank (AHMB), on-site donation is our standard practice. Donating at our facility within the Translational Research Institute at Woolloongabba, allows us to rapidly transfer your sample into an anaerobic environment—a low-oxygen setting essential for preserving oxygen-sensitive gut bacteria.
Many of the most interesting and important microbes in your gut can only survive in these conditions. By collecting your sample on-site, we maximize the scientific value of your donation and ensure it’s as close as possible to its natural state.
What’s Inside Your Collection Kit
Your AHMB collection kit contains everything you need to provide a clean, uncontaminated sample:
- Collection Device (a “hat” that fits in the toilet)
- A clinical waste bag (yellow bag)
- Resealable bag to keep your sample secure
Be sure everything is there before getting started!
Step-by-Step Donation Instructions

Step 1: Receive Your Kit
When you pick up or receive your kit from the AHMB staff, check that all components are present. If anything is missing, or you have any questions, let us know before you begin.
Step 2: Position the Collection Device
Place the small cardboard “hat” inside the toilet bowl. Make sure it sits stable and level to catch the sample without splashing.
Step 3: Provide Your Sample
• Sit comfortably and deposit a stool sample directly into the device.
• Aim for a golf-ball-sized piece (about 5–10 g).
• Avoid contaminating it with water, urine or toilet paper.
Step 4: Preparation for Transfer
Place the collection device with the stool sample into the yellow waste bag. Then, place the yellow bag inside the clear Ziplock bag, press out the air and zip it closed. To finish, put everything inside the AHMB tote bag!
Step 5: Return Your Sample
Hand the bagged sample back to your AHMB representative (or drop it at the designated collection point) as soon as possible.
Step 6: Complete the Questionnaires
Shortly after donation, you’ll receive two online questionnaires asking about your diet, medications and health history. Completing these helps researchers interpret your sample in context, so please fill them out promptly.
A Few Helpful Tips
Relax: Our facilities are private and comfortable, and staff are discreet and supportive.
Stay hydrated: Drinking plenty of water the day before and the day of your donation can help make the process smoother.
Ask questions: We’re here to help with any concerns or uncertainties.
Act promptly: Quick processing is key to preserving microbial integrity—on-site donation takes care of that.
